As part of National Apprentice Week five of our team who grew up with the Daniel Galvin brand were asked about their apprenticeship by The Industry publication. It’s a full Q & A of ups and downs. Stylists and colourists; Stephanie, Jake, Heather and impart valuable advice about their passion, experience, how it’s helped them in their hair career and what they want to do more of in the future.

I speak to Gary Price, the wig director at the Daniel Galvin salon in Selfridges. A trained counsellor, he specialises in medical hair loss, and fits and styles both ready-to-wear and bespoke wigs. He is seeing an increase in young women who simply want to ring the changes, to whom he issues a few words of warning.

‘Most cheaper fashion wigs, known as wefted wigs, are machine made: they have a thick fabric base and just too much hair. My wigs are hand-knotted on to a lightweight transparent base, which means your own skin tone shows through. They all have very fine, lace fronts that require no glue, to create the most realistic hairline.’

A couple of weeks before lockdown I decided that if we were going to be shut up like the Italians I had be prepared, so I had the full works — a tint to cover the greys, a vegetable rinse for shine and a cut.

What Should I Ask My Hairdresser For When I Finally Get An Appointment?

This obviously depends on your hair type and its current state. If, for example, you usually have highlights every 6-8 weeks, you’ll have a lot of root action going on. But, as Louise Galvin, colour director at Daniel Galvin salons suggests, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

‘Clients will have been away from their colourist for several months and so their natural colour will have grown through and they may be pleasantly surprised with the results,’ she says. ‘This is the perfect moment for you to be looking at your colour and style with fresh eyes. I would suggest everyone has a full consultation with their stylist and colourist – treat your first appointment as if it’s your very first visit to the salon. Your colourist should take into account your eye colour, brow colour and your natural hair colour, and take it from there. You may have grown out an old style and this is a chance to adopt change in both your style and colour.’
